Rheinmetall to supply Ukraine with 35mm ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft systems

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has contracted Rheinmetall for the provision of an additional supply of 35mm ammunition for the German-supplied Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft system.

This latest order includes 180,000 rounds of HEI-T ammunition (High Explosive Incendiary with Tracer) and was placed in December 2024. The financial value of this order falls within the high double-digit million euro range and is being financed by Germany. Earlier, in February 2023, Rheinmetall had already secured a contract to deliver 300,000 rounds of ammunition for the Gepard system to Ukraine.

The ammunition that has been ordered is designed for the effective engagement of various airborne targets, including drones. Production will take place at Rheinmetall’s facility in Unterlüß. In response to the heightened demand for 35mm ammunition, the production line at this location was extensively renovated in a remarkably short timeframe during the spring of 2023.

To date, Germany has transferred a total of 55 Gepard anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine, which were previously decommissioned by the Bundeswehr.
