The United Kingdom and Germany have officially announced their collaboration to create a new long-range strike capability exceeding 2,000 kilometers, as both nations move to enhance European security and promote domestic economic growth.
This announcement follows the signing of the Trinity House Agreement on Defence Cooperation in October in London, marking the first bilateral defence agreement of its kind between the United Kingdom and Germany.
German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius welcomed UK Defence Secretary John Healey MP in Berlin for the inaugural Trinity House Defence Ministerial Council, where they will examine the tangible advantages of their agreement, including the deterrence of threats along NATO’s eastern flank, the generation of skilled employment opportunities, and the stimulation of domestic investment.
The UK government stated that the new 2,000 km precision deep strike capability will represent one of the most sophisticated systems ever created by the United Kingdom, aimed at protecting British interests and strengthening NATO’s deterrent posture, while enhancing the defence sectors of both the UK and Europe.
The discussions will also cover collaborative procurement initiative for Sting Ray torpedoes intended for the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, thereby strengthening the capabilities of the UK and Germany to address contemporary underwater threats and enhancing national security for both countries.
John Healey said: “The UK and Germany have never been closer, and the Trinity House Agreement is already making a positive impact on our security and economy. This partnership is helping us make defence an engine for growth – creating jobs, boosting skills, and driving investment across the UK and Germany.”
“In a more dangerous world, NATO and European allies stand united. Together with Germany, we’re leading the way in supporting Ukraine, defending NATO’s eastern flank, and jointly investing in next-generation capabilities.”
